Prof. Benjamin Hatton has a background in materials science, materials chemistry and ceramics engineering, from his graduate research (at McMaster University and the University of Toronto, Canada). Since his PhD (2005) he worked at NIMS (Tsukuba, Japan), Bell Labs (NJ, USA), and Harvard University (2007-2012). In the past 15 years he has led research on biomaterials, antimicrobial materials and bio-inspired materials design. His research covers, Bio-inspired materials and design, Surface engineering for wetting control, Bacteria interactions with surfaces (antimicrobial materials), Smart materials, Materials synthesis by colloidal self-assembly.

In April 2026, Prof. Hatton will be invited to NITech by Prof. Maeda for collaboration in research of advanced inorganic (ceramic) materials.

Title of given lecture in NITech: Using biological inspiration in materials design
